SOCIAL CONNECTEDNESS | 2020

An ongoing visual  conversation during the COVID19 lockdown

This project was an opportunity to explore the idea of a visual dialogue or conversation. It asks us to share a question, a theme or a thought, inviting others to respond with a photograph they have taken. One group conversation that has turned out to be a point of departure for other creative dialogues.

In these strange times where it’s easy to feel disconnected from others and removed from the world going on outside our places of segregation, the starting point is that photography could offer a way to help us continue to share and feel more connected, or failing that – a small distraction to help pass away the days of lockdown.

A WhatsApp conversation with a simple brief:

1. The idea is simple, a visual conversation, sharing or creative dialogue: Post a question, a theme or a thought inviting others to respond with a photograph they have taken.

2. The photo can be captioned or stand alone, but should include the question, theme or thought it is responding to.

3. Anyone can pose a question, theme or a thought. Anyone can respond with a photo.

4. As a visual conversation, all responses should take the form of a photo

5. Like the most interesting conversations, responses don’t necessarily need to posted in order. You can revisit and respond to a previous question, theme or a thought even if the conversation has taken a different direction – just remember to include the question, theme or thought it is responding to.

6. There is no set theme to the visual conversations that take place here, we define those ourselves.

7. This is not about being a ‘good’ or ‘professional’ photographer. There are many things that make a photo interesting to me, and there will be different things that make one appealing to each of you.

8. Be mindful of consent when you are photographing anyone else.
